New Principal Turnover Report Released
May 14, 2020
Together with the Learning Policy Institute (LPI), NASSP has just released “Supporting a Strong, Stable Principal Workforce: What Matters and What Can Be Done,” the final report in their research initiative to address principal turnover and provide policy recommendations to combat this challenge.
This comprehensive report aggregates results from a national survey that featured responses from a representative sample of hundreds of practicing principals. Respondents shared the most influential factors affecting their decisions to stay or leave their positions, and NASSP and LPI used the data to form strategies to help reduce principal attrition. Strategies include:
- Creating high-quality professional growth opportunities
- Increasing decision-making authority
- Fostering productive, not punitive, accountability
- Promoting adequate and stable compensation
- Improving working conditions and providing principals with necessary resources
The report also features research-based policy recommendations for federal, state, and district policymakers that will effect positive change in the principalship—ultimately improving job satisfaction and strengthening the principal pipeline nationwide.
