Important Updates on the DREAM Act & Title II
September 6, 2017
DACA & Dream Act
In light of President Trump’s decision to rescind DACA yesterday, NASSP sent out an action alert this morning urging members to contact their representatives and asking them to support the DREAM Act of 2017. Our support for this bill aligns with the recommendations in our position statement on Undocumented Students that was adopted in 2011. All NASSP members should have received the alert this morning, and you can find a direct link to the alert on the Principal’s Legislative Action Center (PLAC) below:

We ask that you please participate in this alert and share it with other members in your state. The DREAM Act is the best bill that can be passed to ensure that these individuals have real and codified pathways to citizenship.
Title II
This is a big week for Title II funding as the House considers a minibus bill that combines all of the remaining appropriations bills that have not yet been considered. We know that at least two Democrats had planned to offer amendments on Title II, but because there were no offsets for the funding, they were ruled out of order. The Senate Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations Subcommittee will mark up their bill this morning at 11 AM ET, and we should have information about the exact funding levels in the bill when the full committee marks up the bill tomorrow. Getting a good # in the Senate is our best chance to maintain any funding for the program in FY 2018.
A big thank you to everyone who participated in our Title II Day of Action on August 29! This alert will remain live on PLAC, so please continue to spread the word to your members. To date, we have had 255 individuals send 766 messages to their members of Congress. Our most active states are Missouri (64), New Jersey (35), Illinois (14), Pennsylvania (12), Minnesota (9), and Idaho (9).
