Governor’s Civic Engagement Award

We want to let you know that, for the second year, the Pennsylvania Departments of Education and State are inviting Pennsylvania schools to qualify for the Governor’s Civic Engagement Award (GCEA), which recognizes students for their efforts to register their peers to vote and educate them about the electoral process.
Under the GCEA program, PA high schools that register to vote at least 65 percent of their eligible student population qualify for the GCEA. More information about the award distinctions is available on the PA Department of State’s website.
In the 2017-18 school year, 32 high schools held voter registration initiatives, resulting in 2,955 students registering to vote. This year, we want to build on those figures and expand the number of schools that are recognized by the award. Even more importantly, we want to make sure students across the Commonwealth and from all backgrounds are learning about elections, and that those who are eligible are registering to vote.
For the 2018-19 school year:
- High schools can sign up for the GCEA program with Inspire U.S., a nonprofit that will help support registration drives, as well as provide materials and data management.
- GCEA award applications are due on April 22, 2019. Calculations to determine the percent of eligible students registered will be based on the number of students eligible to vote in the May 2019 primary election.
