Ask Congress to Fund the School Leader Recruitment and Support Program
February 19, 2016
Now that President Obama has submitted his Fiscal Year 2017 budget request, Congress has begun the appropriations process. Changes to federal education law under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) make this a particularly important year for advocacy efforts.
NAESP and NASSP are specifically advocating for the School Leader Recruitment and Support program, which was authorized under ESSA and is the successor to the School Leadership program. It is the only federal education program specifically for principals, assistant principals, and other school leaders, and it would aid efforts to improve the recruitment, preparation, placement, support, and retention of effective principals and other school leaders in high-need schools.
President Obama has requested $30 million for the program in FY 2017. You can read more about the President’s budget request on the School of Thought blog. Send a message to your members of Congress today to urge them to fund the program at no less than the President’s requested $30 million for FY 2017.
Send your message to Congress now!
Members of Congress need to hear from their constituents about the programs that are important to them. In fact, many Congressional offices will not show support for a program at all unless they hear from a constituent.
Thank you for your advocacy on behalf of principals everywhere, and for your service to your schools and communities.
