An end to free lunch? School districts face changes

As schools reopened after COVID-19 shutdowns ended, the federal government allowed them to waive fees for breakfast and lunch for all students, essentially making school meals free. At this point, most current kindergartners and first graders have never had to pay for a school meal. And for the last 2 1/2 years, many school districts haven’t even bothered to track who is eligible for free lunches.
